Radio HDO #49 : Harpers’ delight

Contrairement aux idées reçues, la harpe est un instrument très ancien qui n’a cessé de se réinventer. Instrument d’Apollon, qui se serait inspiré de l’arc de sa sœur jumelle Artémis, la harpe viendrait en fait d’Asie Mineure où elle serait apparue environ 3000 ans avant J.C. Utilisée dans la musique classique pour sa sonorité cristalline et éthérée, elle ne cessera d’être diatonique qu’à la fin du 17ème siècle. Au 20ème siècle, de nombreux musiciens de jazz, et surtout des musiciennes, s’en emparent. Parmi eux, la grande Dorothy Ashby bien sûr, dont le Afro-Harping fera date, mais également Alice Coltrane et des pionniers comme Casper Reardon ou Adele Girard, vont dramatiquement transformer son répertoire. Cette playlist, où ne figure pas le grand Harpo Marx (impossible de tout sélectionner), met également à l’honneur certaines de leurs héritières et flirte avec toutes sortes de genres musicaux. Qu’on se le dise, la harpe, c’est «tendance» !

Contrary to popular belief, the harp has continued to reinvent itself. This Apollo’s instrument, which would have been inspired by the bow of his twin sister Artemis, the harp would in fact come from Asia Minor where it appeared around 3000 years BC. Used in classical music for its crystalline and ethereal sound, it will only cease to be diatonic at the end of the 17th century.
